32 Teams in 30-Some Days - New York Jets

The New York Jets

"When you're a Jet, you're a Jet all the way
from your first cigarette to your last dyin' day.
When you're a Jet, let 'em do what they can, you got
brothers around, you're a family man! You're never
alone, you're never disconnected! You're home with
your own when company's expected, you're well
protected! Then you are set with a capital J, which
you'll never forget till they cart you away. When
you're a Jet, you stay a Jet!"

- Jet Song,
West Side Story

Luckily for me, I get to take this preview off - the Jets preview will be brought to you by the H Brothers, T and D.

So I sat down with my brother, lets call him DH, to get his feelings on the Brett-impact and how the Jets will fair with their all-new (very old) QB. Did I mention that he is an honest to goodness Jets fan, not one of these newly created Brett/Jet-fans And what did I get? A Namath-esque guarantee of epic proportions - well epic if you consider just how inept the Jets were last year - he guaranteed that the New York Jets...yes that is the J-E-T-S's...would make the playoffs. He fell short of saying that they would make the Superbowl, but went on to say that it was a possibility that they would make the big game.

He went on to lecture me as to how great their O-line has become - and I must admit on paper they are a fantastic line - and with an arm that can throw more than 7 yards all aspects of their offence will improve (the re-emergence of Thomas Jones, I think he said). He mumbled a bit when I asked him about the Jet defense, I find it hard to think of one player on their 'D' that is any good. Then I remembered the man monster that they drafted, and I began to doubt my initial skepticism about how good the Jets may be.

Well I guess it is a possibility that they could make it all the way to the Superbowl with their current team, but then again so could the Chiefs, but I am not going to hold my breath waiting for that to happen. There is a long and often tragic tradition in football of old hall-of-fame caliber QB's in the twilight of their careers going to other teams when they should hang it up and do Rogaine commercials and sell porcelain figurines on channel 24 with Tammy Fay Baker. I believe, much to my brothers chagrin, that older QB's who have been with one team for a great length of time, will have a hard time adjusting to a new system of play.

Anyone remember Namath as a LA Ram? Won a Superbowl didn't he? No, wait, he didn't. Well then how bout' John Unitas when he suited up as a San Diego Super Charger? He took them to the big dance didn't he? Nope, he didn't.

I just don't think that Favre coming into a brand new system after so long in one place - plus not having the off-season to work with the coaches - will not be the Brett that everyone wants to see. Do I think that the Jets got better with the addition of Favre, yes, (plus what did they give up for him? A 4th round pick and some New York Bagels to go with that delicious Wisconsin cheese? Oh my!) he has to be better than old noodle arm Pennington.

But do I think that he will lead them to the playoffs in one of the hardest divisions to emerge from in the entire NFL? He could, but like the Chiefs chances to win the Superbowl ever again, well, lets just say that I am not going to hold my breath. Chiefs suck! Go Raiders! No, wait, the Raiders suck too.

The Verdict
You all better thank the H Brothers for stopping by, or they might not do it again - heaven knows I'm not paying them anything. Wait... what's that you say? The Jets are actually going to be good this year? Guido fist pumps all around!

The best thing about the H brothers is when they dress in their red and green cover-alls and talk in their italian accents. Those funny cork soakers!

What's a cork soaker? Is that a nice way of saying dego?

And Joe Montana took the Chiefs to the AFC Championship in '93 and to the playoffs in '94 - so the over-the-hill quarterback theory doesn't always hold water.

Of course, the Chiefs haven't won a playoff game since '93 - but that's a sob story for another day.
