Yes folks, Cooper is back to wade through the unending mire of the college football bowl season; previewing all the highlights, lowlights and which games you should shovel your driveway during. And yes, he made it through December.

Finally, the championship game. I feel a lot like Elaine in the denim vest episode. I have had to ingest a lot of crap to get to this point and now it should all payoff, however I am forced to work tonight and thus will miss the game in it’s entirety. Dammit all to hell!

January 8th:

FEDEX BCS Championship Game: Florida (12-1) @ Oklahoma (12-1)

So in less than 6 hrs one of these two teams will be crowned national champions. I am sure fans of Utah will have something to say about that but TS for them. I really wish I had something smart to say about this game however the little intellect that I have has been completely exhausted. All I can say is that I am not getting burned by Oklahoma again this year. There was the debacle against LSU in 2004 BCS title game,

the debacle against USC in 2005 BCS title game,

and then the debacle that was the Fiesta Bowl in 2007 against Boise St. I honestly don’t think this game is going to be remotely close. Tim Tebow is the second coming of Christ it appears. And apparently He himself will also be thrown to the Lions. He was thrown to some lions at some point was he not? Either way enjoy your life sucking career in Detroit Tim Tebow.
(Ed. Note - I don't think he's coming out, and if he does I don't think there's anyway he's #1 - of course it's Detroit, so who knows)

Yes folks, Cooper is back to wade through the unending mire of the college football bowl season; previewing all the highlights, lowlights and which games you should shovel your driveway during.

If We Make it Through December. Bowl Predictions Part 1 of 6? 7? 8?

“If we make it through December we’ll be fine”... Merle Haggard.

That is what I am telling myself as I am gearing up for another busy college bowl season. I am going to buckle down this year and give a synopsis on every game. Synopsis is the word I am looking for, right? Anyway, yes I will preview and predict all 20-bowl games. Hold on, I am being informed that there are actually 34 bowl games this year. 34? That can’t possibly be right. Why that would mean that 68 of 119 teams are guaranteed a bowl game. What’s that you say? They want to add another 5 bowl games for next season. Why not just have 59 bowl games so that 118 of the 119 teams get a bowl game, that way everybody is a winner.(Ed. Note - Just like the CFL playoffs) Well all except for whoever is ranked 119th at the end of the season which is always either the Black Nights of Army or the Idaho Vandals.

This seasons bowl schedule kicks off this Saturday and goes until sometime in mid-January. The 8th of January to be precise. I will not preview every game at the present time, to do that in one sitting would be way too time consuming. And to make you the reader take in that much information in one sitting would be sadistic. Oh some breaking college football news, as I write this on what is Tuesday evening, everybody’s favorite octogenarian head coach Joe Paterno, at the age of 81 has just been given a 3 year extension to remain the head ball coach at Penn St. In all honesty I am happy to see him coming back to coach.

December 20th:

EagleBank Bowl: Wake Forest (7-5) @ Navy (8-4)
It’s good to see that in this time of dire financial ruin that a major U.S financial institution is throwing away money to sponsor a bowl game between Wake Forest and Navy. Kudos’ to you EagleBank, Kudos. What’s that you say? Each member of the winning team gets a free house on which you foreclosed on. That’s just excellent.

Oh this game is also a rarity in that Wake Forest and Navy have already met earlier this season in which Navy won 24 – 17.

Navy to win the rematch 31 – 27

New Mexico Bowl: Fresno St (7-5) @ Colorado St (6-6)
Hmmm apparently the legendary head coach of Alabama Paul “Bear” Bryant was somewhat of a douchebag.

(Ed. Note - To be fair, if I had to stare at the cream suit, I'd be pissed too)

I imagine that he was just still upset because he was told he had to have black players on his team by the national guard. Well still he is not nearly half the asshole that Nick Saban is.

Fresno St to win

MagicJack St. Petersburg Bowl: Memphis (6-6) @ South Florida (7-5)
Please let Magicjack be a local chain of flapjack houses in the St. Petersburg area, that would be so awesome. Oh they are just a free long distance phone company. Dammit!

Who would have guessed that Russians enjoyed college football enough to host a bowl game? I believe the MVP of this game gets a free Lada sedan.

Better yet who would have guessed that The Gambler, Kenny Rogers was such a kick ass bass player.

Then again who would have guessed that apparent greasy hippy is even Kenny Rogers. By my estimate the man has been sporting that beard for the better part of 40 years. That’s a hell of a long time to stick with one facial hairstyle. And I for one salute him for it. What do you think is under that beard? A Chuck Norris like fist? A Chuck Norris beard? Chuck Norris? Or carcasses of some fine roasted chickens? My money is on the chicken.

I highly recommend getting the studio version of that song “Ruby Don’t Take your Love to Town”, it is fantastic. Nothing beats a good old country song about shooting and putting your cheating old lady in the ground.

Just like South Florida will bury Memphis.

Las Vegas Bowl: #17 BYU (10-2) @ Arizona (7-5)
I imagine that when the fine people of the Chamber of Commerce for the city of Las Vegas decided to host a bowl game that they wanted to attract certain teams and their fan bases to come to their fine city and spend money drinking, gambling and whoring it up. Well Las Vegas open your arms up to Brigham Young University and it’s fine fan base which makes up the majority of the Church of Latter Day Saints. Yes a team of devout Mormon’s and their fans are making the holy trek across the salt flats to Vegas to play the Wildcats of Arizona. Actually it appears that BYU makes a yearly appearance in this game having played in it the last 3 seasons. Maybe it is made to be that way to give the Mormans one day of debauchery. Well here is a random clip from last years Las Vegas Bowl which I oddly enough remember watching live.

When BYU wins this game their fans will be staying up till the wee hours of 11 pm to celebrate the win. I believe there is a planned celebratory scripture reading at the Wynn following the game.

December 21st:

R&LCNO Bowl: Southern Miss (6-6) @ Troy (8-4)
The actual full name for this game is “The R and L Carriers New Orleans Bowl”…Jesus tap dancing Christ! I assume neither R and L Carriers nor the City of New Orleans had enough money to sponsor a bowl game on their own so they decided to pool their resources in this time of financial woes.

December 23rd:

Poinsettia Bowl: #11 TCU (10-2) @ #9 Boise St (12-0)
This is actually known as the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl. The people at the San Diego County Credit Union would like to remind you over this holiday season to stay classy while we foreclose on your ass.

Seriously, Boise St wins their conference by decimating every team they faced, are undefeated and the best they get is the Poinsettia Bowl? Does the bowl selection committee not remember Boise St – Oklahoma from 2 years ago? Only the best bowl game ever!

(Ed. Note - Those videos still give me chils, and probably always will)

Seriously though this should be one of the better bowl games this year. It is just a shame two quality teams are forced to play in such a meaningless bowl game.

Bowl Bonanza - The All You Can Eat Buffet is Now Closed

Cooper has apparently been spared the clutches of the sinister Red River and gives you his prediction for tonight's BCS National Championship Game...

Well I am back here at the Sports As Life satellite office in Nipawin after my voyage to Winnipeg and back. As of mid-February I will closing up the shop here in the north and portaging it down the Yellowhead to Winnipeg. There is a much more active sports scene there I am told. Get this, they have a professional baseball team. I am not sure who they are affiliated with but still, it's just exciting to know. Unfortunately the only bowl game I was able to catch the past few days was the Fiesta Bowl in which West Virginia soundly handed Oklahoma their asses and made them wear them as hats. An "asshatery" game if you will. If you didn't catch the game you missed an amazing performance by Mountaineers freshman RB Noel Devine, who was only playing due to injuries to starters. It was also good to see West Virginia interim head coach Bill Stewart get promoted to head coach following the game. The players obviously had a lot of love for the man, which was shown by them carrying him off the field. So to see him not get the job would have been a complete slap in the face to the players. I don't believe he was even a candidate for the head coaching position before the game, so good on the University of West Virginia for giving him the job.

Well to what really matters.

Tonight is the final game of the college season. And if we are lucky enough, this game should determine the national champs. Tonight is the BCS Championship game. The game features the #2 ranked LSU Tigers (11-2), the champs of the SEC up against #1 THE Ohio State University Buckeyes (11-1) and champs of the Big 10. Tonight's game kicks-off at 8pm eastern from the Superdome in New Orleans. This is the part where I could throw out some stats and trends at you people but I have a feeling that none of that really matters. The match up features the Tigers, as mentioned many times before against the Buckeyes, which is some sort of nut. Actually looking back at the schedule there were 5 universities which used the Tiger as their mascot - as well as 2 Cougars, 1 Nittany Lion and a Wildcat. That's a lot of cats folks. That kid from high school must of had a good time this bowl season. He was in fact a "big fan of the big cats". (That joke is so terribly inside that I think only myself and Chris H will get it)

I believe this year will be a repeat of last year's championship game in which Ohio State came into the game ranked #1 and was soundly defeated by a lower ranked team from the SEC. Last year of course that was Florida, this year it will be LSU. LSU should win this one by 2 TD's, give or take a field goal here or there.

And with that comes to the end of the bowl season and my sole purpose here at sportsaslife.com for the past 6 months. I feel like a lost child in a Wal-Mart now. What to do, what to do? Nobody wants to read about offseason college football news and I especially don't want to have to research it and write about it. I guess I could always try and revive Coopers Corner. That horse had been sent to the glue factory quite some time ago but I believe he is still next in line to be made into said glue. So we will see what happens I guess. I am still not sure what my computer situation will be in the 'Peg. My 80 year old grandparents don't exactly have a state of the art Mac with DSL high speed now do they. My kingdom for a laptop and wireless!

Bonanza-ed!

Looking at my picks so far today I am not doing so good. After losing to Appalachian State who would have thought that Michigan would come out and defeat Florida in a bowl game. Well Wednesday we get into down to the final few games leading up to the national title game on Monday Jan 7th.

Wednesday features the Fiesta Bowl which has the West Virginia Mountaineers (10-2), the champs of the Big East and the 11th ranked team nationally up against the Oklahoma Sooners (11-2), the champs of the Big 12 and the 3rd ranked team nationally. West Virginia by all rights should be playing for the national title, however they were upset by Pittsburgh in the season finale which was an absolute disgrace. As far as the matchup goes we have a Mountaineer, which I assume is a grizzled old man who spends his days wandering in the hills of West Virginia up against a Sooner, a term used to describe people who settled unassigned land located in Oklahoma in the 1800's. Neither of them are intimidating in the least. This one could go either way I figure, but I will make Oklahoma my pick.

On Thursday we have the Orange Bowl. In this year's Orange Bowl we have the manatee of the

land, Mark Mangino and his Kansas Jayhawks (11-1), the 1st place team in the Big 12 North division and ranked 8th nationally up against Virginia Tech (11-2), the champs of the ACC and the 5th ranked team nationally. This matchup features a group of militant abolitionists up against a Hokie, which according to Wikipedia is a "nonsensical word made up purely as an attention getter". The V-Tech mascot is the "Hokie-bird", which is some sort of turkey. V-Tech actually used to be called "The Fighting Gobblers" before the name change to "Hokies", hence the turkey mascot. So we have a group of murderous militants up against a giant turkey. I have to go with the turkey on this one, do not underestimate the advantage of flight. What's that? I am being told turkey's do not fly. I have been provided some video evidence as proof. Check it out for yourself. I still have to go with the Hokies in this one. Turkeys attacking from 2000 ft above, hitting the ground like sacks of wet cement is a terrifying thought.

On Saturday is the International bowl which has the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (7-5), the 5th place team in the Big East up against the Ball State Cardinals (7-5), the 2nd place team in the Mid America Conference. If turkeys can't fly I am assuming that neither can cardinals. I am taking Rutgers in this one.

On Sunday we have the ever popular GMAC bowl. The Bowling Green Falcons (8-4), the champs of the Mid America Conference up against the Golden Hurricanes of Tulsa (9-4), the 2nd place team from Conference USA. I like the rare weather phenomenon over the falcon in this matchup. Tulsa will win this one fairly easily.

I will be submitting my pick for Monday's national title game which features THE Ohio State university against the Bayou Tigers of LSU.

New Year's Bowl Bonanza

Here are Cooper's Bowl picks for New Year's Day...

*Note* I have been forced to write my picks for Tuesday's bowl games on WordPad. Hopefully this doesn't cause a problem. I have added some links, I hope they work.

It is mid Monday afternoon and it looks like my first pick of the day, Cal over Air Force will come out correct. The other two games being played right now don't look so hot but there is still a lot of time left. On to tomorrow's games. Another 6 games are on the schedule. We are now in the meat of the schedule. Tomorrow is when we get into some of the more high profile bowl games.

The Outback Bowl kicks things of Tuesday morning. This game features the Tennessee Volunteers (9-4), the 1st place team in the SEC East Conference and the 16th ranked team in the nation up against the Wisconsin Badgers (9-3) the 4th place team from the Big 10 and the 18th ranked team in the nation. I would like to pick Wisconsin to win this game because we all know that Volunteers are losers who can't get a job in the real world and hang around food banks. While the Badger is a proud, noble creature - two things that a Volunteer is not. However, Tennessee is the hotter of the two teams coming in and they definitely had the more difficult schedule coming out of the SEC. I predict the Volunteers to win a close one in what should be a great game.

30 minutes after the Outback Bowl kicks the day off, the Cotton Bowl kicks off in Dallas. This year's Cotton Bowl has the Missouri Tigers (11-2), the 2nd place team from the Big 12 and the 7th ranked team nationally up against the Arkansas Razorbacks (8-4), the 3rd place team from the SEC west and the 25th ranked team nationally. As you all well know Arkansas has a new coach in former Falcon head coach Bobby Petrino. I do not believe he will play a factor in this game as I believe he is not coaching, but I could be wrong. I refuse to research this. Mizzou should by all rights be playing in the Orange Bowl, however the Orange Bowl committee figured that Mark Mangino and his Kansas Jayhawks would be a better draw. Everyone likes to see a freak of nature I guess. Anyway Mizzou is by far the better team, as well I do believe that a tiger can take easy care of a wild pig. Unless it is like Hogzilla or something similar, which I highly doubt a razorback is. This game also features two favorites for next year's Heisman, Mizzou QB Chase Daniel and Arkansas RB Darren McFadden. Both will be future NFL stars. To get to the matter at hand I predict the Tigers of Mizzou coming out victorious.

Next we have the Capital One Bowl which features the Michigan Wolverines (8-4), the 2nd place team from the Big 12 up against last year's National Champs, the Florida Gators (9-3), the 3rd place team from the SEC east and the 9th ranked team nationally. Florida of course is QB'd by this year's Heisman Trophy winner and apparent successor to Jesus Christ, Tim Tebow. Michigan of course as we all know had that horrific opening day loss to the Mountaineers of Appalachian State. The Tim Tebow factor alone in this one is a huge draw to pick the Gators. The addition of WR Percy Harvin to mix, plus the fact that a Gator can pretty much maul a wolverine makes the Florida Gators the easy pick in this game. On a side note, watch for Michigan RB Mike Hart. He is a sure 1st round pick. A solid back only topped by Darren McFadden in my opinion.

The Gator Bowl is the final game before we get into the Grand-Daddies of the bowl games. The Gator Bowl has the Texas Tech Red Raiders (8-4), the the 3rd place team from the Big 12 South up against the Virginia Cavaliers (9-3), the 2nd place team in the ACC coastal division and the 21st ranked team nationally. Texas Tech has an explosive offensive capable of putting up some huge numbers and I look for them to do the same against the Cavaliers. Plus the fan support from this guy alone will give the Red Raiders all the moral support they need to win the game.

At 4:30 eastern time we have the biggest bowl game of them all, the Rose Bowl, live from, the Rose Bowl. This year we have the University of Illinois Fighting Illini (9-3), the 2nd place team from the Big 10 and the 13th ranked team nationally up against the team that was a pre-season favorite to win the national title and was also dubbed "possibly the best college football team of all time" the USC Trojans (10-2), the Pac-10 champs, and the 6th ranked team nationally. USC manhandled most of their opposition this season (ex: Arkansas, Nebraska, Cal, UCLA,) but also lost against a 40 point underdog team in Stanford and had a close loss against Oregon. Common sense tells me to pick USC with their superior talent and depth, however shear hatred for the Trojans is making me pick the underdog in this one and go with "Juice" Williams and the Fighting Illini.

Finally we have the Sugar Bowl rapping things up for us New Years Day. The Hawaii Warriors (12-0), the champions of the WAC and the 10th ranked team nationally are up against the Georgia Bulldogs (10-2), the 1st place team from the SEC east and the 4th ranked team nationally. I can't see Hawaii pulling off a Boise St like upset in this one. Georgia comes from a far superior conference, has a tougher schedule to go through, and has more talent overall. Hawaii breezed to a 12-0 season by having to defeat teams like San Jose State, Northern Colorado, Charleston Southern, Idaho, and Louisiana Tech. Not exactly wins against quality teams. Georgia will win this one by about 20 + I figure.

New Year's Eve Bowl Bonanza

In which Cooper returns with a steaming heap of bowl games, which you should not put in your mouth... unless you're Beyonce.

With the Sports As Life holiday break officially over I have decided to get down to submitting my picks for this week's upcoming bowl games. Due to the break and my lack of a computer with Internet access I was unable to give my predictions for the past few bowl games. The following are the bowl games I missed and what my predictions were. I am being honest with these, honestly.

I had correctly picked the following games:

Purdue to defeat Central Michigan in the Motor City Bowl.
Texas to defeat Arizona State in the Holiday Bowl.
Boston College to defeat Michigan St in the Champs Sports Bowl.
Mississippi St to defeat Central Florida in the Liberty Bowl.
Penn St to defeat Texas A&M in the Alamo Bowl.

I was incorrect picking the following games:

Houston to defeat TCU in the Texas Bowl.
Maryland to defeat Oregon St in the Emerald Bowl
Uconn to defeat Wake Forest in the Meineke Car Care Bowl.

There are six bowl games this Monday, however only one of them, the Chick-Fil-A Bowl offers up a decent match up. There rest can be considered slightly better than bottom-feeder games.

Unfortunately I am pressed for time today so my picks will not be in depth. I have to actually do work at work today so I am phoning it in as the kids say.

In the Armed Forces Bowl I predict the California Golden Bears to defeat the Air Force Falcons. Cal at one point was ranked #2 in the nation and could have been ranked #1 if it wouldn’t have been for an upset loss against Oregon St which led them to lose 6 of their last 7 games.

In the Humanitarian Bowl I have Georgia Tech winning a close game over the Fresno State Bulldogs. I believe the winner of this game receives a generous donation from the Human Fund.

In the Sun Bowl I look for the Bulls of South Florida to easily handle the injury-plagued Oregon Ducks. The last 2 games of the season Oregon was down to it’s 4th string QB, who just happens to be the younger brother of former Charger Ryan Leaf.

The Music City Bowl has Kentucky up against Florida State. The Seminoles of Florida State have 30 + players suspended for this game following an academic cheating ring that had gone on through the season. I think some players are being asked to play both sides of the ball for the Seminoles in this one due to the lack of bodies. Kentucky will easily handle Florida State.

In the Insight.com Bowl we have an interesting match up of coaches in a way. Oklahoma State of course has Mike Gundy who famously let us know that he is in fact “A Man” and that he is 40! And Indiana has, or should I say had, coach Terry Hoeppner who sadly passed away after a recent, short battle with brain cancer. I am going with the sentimental favourite in this one and taking the Hoosiers of Indiana.

And finally we have the Chick-Fil-A Bowl, which proudly reminds us to “Eat Mor Chikin”. This game features the 15th ranked Clemson Tigers against the 22nd ranked Auburn Tigers. There is a definite conundrum picking this game going by the mascot factor, Tiger vs Tiger. I believe this game is the nexus of the universe. Earlier this season I had mentioned in my picks about how “Aubie the Tiger” from Auburn was the 3 time mascot national champion. I am sticking with a winner in this one. Being a tiger vs tiger match up it will be close right to the very end with each team knowing exactly what the other is doing. A George Senior vs Oscar type fight if you will. However, Aubie the Tiger prevails with a late field goal and lifts Auburn to victory.

Weekend Before Christmas Bowl Bonanza

Cooper didn't get the memo about the Christmas holiday - so we've got another Bowl Bonanza for you before the break.

Here I am back to preview this weekend's bowl games. As I check the scores for the first time today I see that my prediction of Navy defeating Utah was a little shortsighted. Let’s see if I can come out of this weekend with a winning record, or at least a .500 record. We have 5 bowl games this weekend starting off tonight in New Orleans with the New Orleans Bowl. I believe Pat Fiacco is on there bowl committee and came up with the name. Who else would think of such an unoriginal name?

This year’s version of the New Orleans bowl pits the Florida Atlantic Owls (7-5), the champions of the Sun Belt Conference up against the Memphis Tigers (7-5), the 2nd place team from Conference USA. This is what is referred to as a “bottom-feeder” game. A game that is created just so two small school teams can pick up some TV revenue. One prominent Internet football scribe previewed this game with the following two words; “Who Cares”. Well I don’t. I can say I will not be watching this game. However, an Owl is no match for a Tiger so Memphis is your winner.

On Saturday we have 3 games on the slate. First up is the Papajohns.com Bowl from legendary Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama. This match-up features the Cincinnati Bearcats (9-3), the 3rd place team from the Big East and ranked 20th in the nation against the Southern Miss Golden Eagles (7-5), the 4th place team from Conference USA. Like all of you I did not see a minute of either team play this year so I can’t give you any honest player breakdowns that you can’t read for yourself on someone else’s column. From what I have read most columnists have a man crush on Cincinnati QB Ben Mauk. As far as the mascot match up is concerned the Golden Eagles have the advantage in the air. However, the Bearcat is some sick genetic cross between man’s most ruthless enemy the bear and an ornery house cat. Bearcats hands down. They are not only the more dominant species - but as a team they are ranked higher nationally and come from a much more competitive conference.

Later on in the afternoon we have the New Mexico Bowl, live from University Stadium in Albuquerque. “There’s a New Mexico!?” This game features the Nevada Wolfpack (6-6), the 4th place team in from the WAC against the hometown New Mexico Lobos (8-4), the 3rd place team from the Mountain West Conference. I automatically assume the New Mexico Lobos created this bowl game just so they can get some revenue dollars. Why else would this bowl exist? As for as mascots are concerned a pack of Wolves is pretty terrifying, but with there being not one documented case of a wolf killing a human in North America the intimidation factor wears off pretty quick. I wasn’t able to find out what a “Lobo” is so I provided a link to something similar. Terrifying, absolutely terrifying. Let’s hope that they don’t organize one day and kill us all. The Hobos of New Mexico take this in a walk.

The final game on Saturday is the Las Vegas Bowl, (Damn you Fiacco!) I was about to say that this is another useless bowl game however I see that ABC has Brad Nessler, Bob Griese and Paul Maguire as analysts. They only dust off this crew for big games. Anyway this year’s version of the Las Vegas Bowl has the BYU Cougars (10-2), the Mountain West Champions and the 19th ranked team nationally against the UCLA Bruins (6-6), the 4th place team from the PAC-10 conference. It is very rare that two teams face each other twice in one year but here we have that very situation. In the first match up early in the season UCLA defeated BYU 27-17 at home. That was before UCLA was decimated with injuries and their season went down the crapper. BYU has been one of the best teams nationally since losing to UCLA way back in week two. The thought of seeing a bruin go toe-to-toe with a cougar is somewhat exotic. I would have to think that the quickness of the cougar gives it the advantage over the slow, purposeful bruin. BYU takes it in a cakewalk.

The final game of the weekend is this Sunday. If you don’t feel like watching the Vikings and the Redskins you can tune into the Hawaii Bowl. This years game has last years Cinderella team Boise St (10-2), the 2nd place team in the WAC and ranked 24th nationally against the Eastern Carolina Pirates (7-5), the 2nd place team from Conference USA. I am not even going to waste my time breaking down this game. Boise St wins this one by about 6 TD’s and a couple of field goals.

Monday Headlines

~~Here are today's Headlines~~. There will be no Headlines today, as I really don't have anything to say about anything other than football - and I'll do that tomorrow.

Actually I do have one thing to say today and it is this - Who are you and what have you done with the Calgary Flames?

Also, if the Price is Right tries to give you "a new car" - I would deliberately lose at Plinko if I were you.

Anyway, instead of your normally scheduled Headlines we're going to kick off the College Football Bowl Season. Between Cooper and myself we're hoping to have a preview or review of most of the Bowl games. First up is the Poinsettia Bowl on Thursday night. Here's Cooper's preview:

After a month-long hiatus I am finally back with my review of the upcoming Bowl Season, severed hand and all. This first Bowl game of the season is the San Diego Country Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl (Even Jenna Jameson says that is a mouthful) Oh Snap! The Poinsettia Bowl is Dec 20th @ 9pm live from, I am assuming Qualcomm Stadium, home of the Chargers.

This year's version of the Poinsettia Bowl pits the University of Utah Utes (8-4), the 3rd place team from the Mountain West Conference up against the Naval Academy Midshipmen (8-4) who are an independent entry. I was not able to catch any Utah games this year but I did watch two Navy games, one in which they ended a 43 year losing streak against Notre Dame and the other was the Army-Navy game.

Navy is a fun team to watch. They run a very entertaining old school option style offense similar to the one used by Nebraska (when they were actually good). Navy will have an assistant as the head coach for this game after the former head coach Paul Johnson pulled a Bobby Petrino and dashed for Georgia Tech after the final game of the season. But as usual all of that “trivial” stuff like stats and trends and talent go by the wayside. The only thing that truly matters when breaking down a game is breaking down the mascot match-up.

The Utes are named after a tribe of local Native Americans that a group of Mormons most likely slaughtered in the 1800’s and then decided they were good enough to name a football team after.

On the other side, the Midshipmen represents a naval officer of the absolute lowest rank, who is most likely happens to be gay. And here is a link to their fight song. Apparently they have a former Ute on their team.

I have to tip my hat on this one to Navy. A group of native Americans who were most likely slaughtered is no match for a group of gay old salts.
